So what do you write about on the Monday after super Saturday and before lightning Tuesday? Or is it not a day in between , but also a day of significance? Judging Monday? But who is judging whom?

Well you can’t say media weren’t important this weekend. CDA congress was aired live. As if something really important and unexpected was going to happen. Oh yes, it was (and is) important what happened in Arnhem. But unexpected? I don’t think so. Was there really anyone who thought the majority of the CDA was going to vote against their leaders? I doubt it. But still the media impact was enormous. All day radio, television, people tweeting like mad and off course the internet. All about the different Christian democrat politicians.

Funny enough we hardly noticed what happened at the VVD meeting that took place at the same time. Yes, we knew the outcome. But wasn’t the process as important? Weren’t the arguments of both sides as important? Wasn’t it at the VVD that prominent party members drew conclusions from their principles? At least two prominent VVD-politicians have left the party.

Funny enough Gijs de Vries (once the international terror coordinator), leaving the party was only mentioned between the lines. A small article next to huge articles about the CDA congress and how involved everyone was and how good it was that all those people not agreeing with the party line stayed in the party. Why is that good? Will it help them achieve what they want to achieve? Will it put pressure on the cooperation with Wilders? Are those questions asked? Hardly. But the analysis of the emotional level of the different contributions is everywhere. (By the way: reminds me of the discussions after the debate just before the elections.)

So why all this attention. Why did we use all our media on this congress and the (non?)event taking place there? Not because it was going to change anything. Maybe because it was an event? An emotional event? Were we interested in the content or the context? Was it another real life soap? Is that why we watched? Is that what all the media attention was about this weekend and today? Is that why we were hardly interested in what happened in the VVD? Because there was no great display of emotion?

Just a question: Are our media still about informing us or just about amusing us? And if it is the last and we accept that, don’t we deserve what we get?
