A few months ago I talked about the new developments in libraries. The age of just lending books is over. Libraries are looking for new forms of service in addition to the existing services. Possible new services are an art library, a place to meet for several target groups or a central information center. The library is getting some help from an unexpected corner. The NOS (Dutch broadcast association) has announced to cooperate with the public libraries. The newsarchive of the NOS will be merged with background information from the libraries.

I also mentioned in my previous blog that mainly young people don’t come to the library anymore. The libraries and NOS set up several media literacy projects for young people. For some years the NOS has tried to interest young people for news by visiting schools. Mediacoaches at libraries can play an important role in convincing more young people of the importance of newsstories. These coaches help students to create their own newsstories. Some pilotstudies have shown that this approach arouses students’ interest.

NOS and the libraries are looking for new ways to satisfy their public, but also to attract a new audience. Both parties suffer from all the new digital possibilities. The introduction of e-readers and online bookstores made the library less popular. The NOS is not only in competition with other newsstations, but also with the possibilities of social media. Mobile applications allow citizens to create news about a disaster, an event or a miracle through a text message or picture on Facebook or Twitter. Instead of beating the competition, the NOS and public libraries better use the competiton for other purposes.

I think both parties made a good choice by working together. NOS and the library are in the eye of the public trusted and reliable institutions. They also have an educational role. Combining these roles and strengths create new possibilities for new values. Both parties can teach young people how social media can be used to create news. For instance they can teach students that it is important to check resources about an event to know what has really happened, instead of posting a text message as soon as possible on Facebook.

It is really important however that the students are activitated. They learn best when they experience how it should be done. The right way of education combined with the valuable experience of mediacoaches can lead to a new successful service for libraries in the future.
