A year ago now, I started using foursquare, just to see what it is all about. Let’s call it a professional interest. I was the only one I knew who used it, expect for the guy who introduced me to the service. Nowadays my colleagues started using it and it’s become great fun. At least, I think so. Just this morning I ousted one of our graduate students who got to be the mayor of the University in my weeks absence when in Africa. A couple of weeks later I got it back. And it brings me joy…

Now, what does this mean? Why would something like this give me joy? It’s not like it is a big achievement, but it feels that way. I think that if foursquare get’s bigger in the Netherlands we’ve got a problem on our hands. If everyone wants to check in at their workplace, they will all be queuing up in traffic even more. Out with the “nieuwe werken”, because if they work at home they’ll not be able to retain or get the mayorship on the workfloor. Eventually this will lead to a greater productivity and a boost to the economy, I guess. I can see the newspaper headings: “Foursquare gets economy on track”.

The question I get most from people nót using foursquare is: ,,Why?, for the love of pete why?” And to be honest, I’m not able to answer this question. Except for the look on the face of that one graduate student who just came in and saw that she lost her mayorship. Priceless…..
