The augmented reality technology is relatively new and still under development. Only a handful of companies dare to venture into this area. Thus far only two companies emerged with Software Development Kits capable of creating ‘THE’ augmented reality of our dreams (or in movies like Minority Report). In terms of hardware we’re looking at the latest generation smartphones which are currently limited by the development in their respectable sizes, durability and battery-life. But our technological progress grows exponentially on a daily basis.

I know this will be a blunt statement but I firmly believe that Augmented Reality ‘IS’ the future for all communication. Whether it will be used for personal reasons or professionally, it will show you a whole new world to interact with. Currently we use our mobile devices to render this so-called reality through our little cameras. But as science and technology progresses, we’ll be able to use much smaller and more user-friendly devices to relay that information. At one point the mobile phone will become an obsolete piece and will be replaced by glasses, earpieces, watches, or maybe even bionic contacts.

I do realize this all sounds like science fiction but all over the internet and in the real world we see examples of hackers, technicians and all sorts of handymen inventing new ways to communicate using existing materials. Scientists are developing new compounds, batteries, and computerchips on a very small scale that eventually will end up as a finished product on the shelves of your mobile provider. Hopefully we’ll have a better reception by then.

When all these great ideas and solutions come together we’ll see a glimpse of what our future mobile phones will look like. But don’t take my word for it though, look for signs around you. If you’re still not convinced I’ll give you a few examples: 10 Devices, Nokia Concept, Tony Stark?
