With the Museumbattle just a few days behind us, it is a personal relief that the solutions students presented for several museums were not all technology driven. I think we heard the words ‘QR code’ only once or twice. Of course there was technology involved, such as interactive screens in the museums as a solution for explaining the development of innovative products, and, no small matter, for world peace.  But these technology solutions were kept nicely in balance with solutions that focused on the museum visitors. Better still they let the museum be the museum and set out to actively engage potential visitor by visiting their neighbourhood. A bus taking ‘Klokhuis’ and ‘Beeld en Geluid’ on tour, visiting schools, and the winner of the Mediabattle actually put people together in each others living room to share experiences on favourite personal cultural objects…

Still with all the craziness of the computer tablets in the air it is somewhat surprising this wasn’t picked up by the students, especially since museums, archives and libraries are vulnerable to all the newest gadgets and latest hypes because no one really knows how to reinvent themselves in this age of rapid low-cost technology developments for the masses. So every bandwagon that comes along is jumped on. Mutlitouch table? Yes please! Social media? Bring it on! QR-code? Indulge me!

Furthermore there is the ‘in your face’ project of Google on art (www.googleartproject.com) which brings 17 museums online, including the Van Gogh museum and Rijksmuseum. Already the figures are impressive: more than 6000 360-degrees panoramas with more than 1000 art objects on show. Some of which with a resolution of more than 7 billion pixels. You can literally see Van Gogh stroke of genius on your Apple LED display… But somehow these figures are more impressive than the art experience and reminds me of the CD I bought back in the eighties (?) of a 3D Louvre. It was more fun to actually navigate through the Louvre than look at the pictures (but maybe that was my young age…).

A company that seems to be more in touch with the art experience is Adobe and its Adobe museum. It is a virtual space designed to showcase and preserve groundbreaking digital work and to present expert commentary on how digital media influences culture and society. It instantly emerges you in the individual art works, and since they are ‘digital born’ there is no ‘steroid’ talk about pixels…

But both platforms (Google and Adobe) could be easily ‘ported’ to a tablet. If you take this ‘over the top’ you get what artist Leo Caillard (www.leocalliard.com) has envisioned. Nice one.
