Lets be honest, my trip to the dOCUMENTA in Kassel was a so called free lunch and in that sense it was very enjoyable and I saw a lot of artworks that were worth the trip. Had I paid for it myself, I would have been a little bit disappointed. The worldwide leading exhibition in Kassel that takes place every five years shows the state of ‘Art’ from a western perspective. This no way means that only western art is shown. Contrarily, It seemed that all artworks or artist needed an Afghanistan connection. It could be as little as a single postcard your grandmother had kept in her knickers during the Paris riots in 1968 as long as the connection was there. To the curator of the 13th edition of dOCUMENTA, Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev al art had to show in some way or form a political engagement. And as usual when political engagement is required, libertarian views are not included. It all reeked like what my brother likes to call the ‘Green Taliban’. Those people that fly all the way from New York in order to eat only locally produced turnips and other forgotten vegetables and force others to do so too (poor Robert). Nevertheless I saw a great work of art made by Michael Rakowitz about the destruction of culture (books) in the past. Beautiful medieval books from the library of Kassel destroyed in the 2nd world war were recreated in marble from the area of the destroyed Bamyan Buddha’s destroyed by the Taliban in…. Afghanistan. Between those marble books there was also a marble book destroyed by one of the finer German traditions called book-burning. Most astounding were two Sumerian clay tablets that survived through time for the ancient Sumerian library was burned and the tablets consequently baked. All in all it was a beautiful example of true artistic research.
To my surprise I’ve seen only one computer and that only showed a video of the artist. To the curator of dOCUMENTA (13) the Internet and all related innovations did not produce much interesting. Just Google some pictures with “Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev” and you immediately understand why it’s “Green Taliban” and not “Cyberpunk”. Therefor my own personal addition to the dOCUMENTA (13) Check out http://www.thejohnnycashproject.com/
