I remember the good old days. The days without mobile phones. The times where there was just one telephone in each household.. I remember my mam calling me: ‘Nien.. Tineke on the phone for you!!’  And then I would chat with my friend and make an appointment at what time we would meet where.  We would always meet under the big clock and I was always on time.

I remember the first classmate who came to school with a mobile phone. We made fun of him..  He must have had a whole different perception of how his schoolmates would react on his phone when he was walking to school…

I remember my first mobile. Of course it was a pocket line swing, just like most of my friends had. And from that day on, me and my phone are inseparable. Unfortunately my friends know this too. They know I always have my phone within reach. So if I don’t answer the phone, they know I’m probably ignoring them. Not really friendly they say.

Nowadays you can reach the internet with you mobile phone. People say it’s so easy: ‘You can check your email wherever you are!’. The thing that crosses my mind is, why would you want to check your email anytime, anywhere?? Some phones even give a beep when an email enters your mailbox, just as receiving a sms message.

Let’s say 70 % of my emails is work related, 20 % is private and 10 % is spam. I can just imagine my day.
Waking up receiving the first email of TNT post saying they have a discount ‘especially for me’ on ordering my own personalized calendar, having breakfast reading about a student who is ill and can’t come to class today, walking to my car replying to a dinner-invitation for that evening.  Same thing in the evening, while having a nice dinner at my friends house, seeing that one of my students handed in their assignment, my boss reminding me I still have to write my hours and my mom asking me how we’re going to spend the Christmas days.

Where is this taking us? Do we really need to be on top of everything all the time? Or would I enjoy my breakfast better without having to think about work and could I pay more attention to my friend without being disturbed by my phone? Don’t we experience life better without having to divide our attention between the thing you are doing and your telephone?

I went to a concert this weekend and just when they started to play, my brother had his cell phone in his hands. I asked him: ‘what are you doing? Put away your phone, the show is starting!’ And he said: ‘No, this is important, it’s for school….’

On the other hand, my dad showed me a new application he bought for his iphone, it’s from the Albert Heijn. You can choose a recipe by giving some preferences, and it makes your shopping list. Then you can choose the Albert Heijn which is closest to you, and it even makes a map that guides you through the store to all the ingredients on your list.

I think me and my internet phone will be inseparable…
