Harry van Vliet
Lector
A cognitive psychologist of origin, I got my PhD in 1991 at the University of Utrecht on a study regarding emotional experiences of film and television. After teaching several years at Utrecht University at the Faculty of Humanities, I switched to the cooperate environment and became a business consultant. After seven years ending up as a new media consultant at Reed Elsevier. In 1999 I joined the Telematica Instituut, mainly doing research and project management on content engineering issues. In February 2007 I became a part-time 'lector' (professor) on crossmedia content at the Hogeschool Utrecht, a University of Applied Sciences, at the Faculty of Communication and Journalism. Besides my work I try to spend some time on a mountainbike, 'compose' some music and play with my son.
My assignment is to develop applied research on the theme of crossmedia content. Crossmedia content is by most regarded as having to do with different distribution channels for delivering content to consumers. I argue that this cannot longer be the sole defining aspect due to the convergence of technology, devices and organisations. Crossmedia should also include research questions about co-creation, orchestration of content packages, the presentation of content and the experience of users. As a research head of the Crossmedia Lab I supervise all projects and support the people, tutors and students, working in the lab on the projects. Furthermore I keep an eye on the account management of the Lab. My main research interest is crossmedia user experience and interactivity in different contexts such as culture heritage, HDTV and eLearning. I actively contribute to the social tagging experiments in PACE, the HDTV experiments, and the Wiki on History of the Future. I teach crossmedia value models and several other courses.
