Nathalie Waser
Projectmanager CELL
In September 2009 I started as a program manager at the Hogeschool Utrecht (University of Applied Science), managing the program 'Creative Experience Learning Labs' (CELL) which is about working together and sharing knowledge and information between business, education and research within the field of the Creative Industries.
There are many different definitions of the Creative Industries sector but most of these include advertising, architecture, arts, design, fashion, film, video & photography, music & performing arts, publishing, TV and radio, software and computer games. So quit a handful of topics. CELL projects can be initiated from any of these topics as long as they have a strong link with the topics relevant for Hogeschool Utrecht: ICT & Business, Crossmedia, and Design. The variety of the project content, the different project approaches and the collaboration between different parties makes it for me a very exciting program.
As a child I was already interested in engineering and art. Instead of playing with dolls I build them houses and designed and made them furniture and clothes. So Industrial Design Engineering at the Delft University of Technology was the perfect study for me to combine engineering and art.
When I graduated in 1995, (Industrial) Design and especially Dutch Design was not so popular and well known as it is nowadays. But IT was booming and companies were looking for people no matter what their background or study were. Although I bought my first ‘computer’ in 1984 (a ZX Spectrum 48K) and managed to learn some Basic, I was not interested in a job in IT at all. So after a ‘just for fun’ job interview I started to work for a IT company called Pink Elephant together with philosophers and anthropologists and it was really fun and a great company to work for.
For nine years I worked on many projects for a lot of different companies; as a project manager and consultant on organization and process (re)design. And for four years I was the team manager of a development team building websites for several Dutch and foreign newspapers like de Volkskrant, NRC, AD, die Welt and Independent.
So after 13 years I decided to go find a job more related to my Industrial Design background. Program manager of the CELL program is a great opportunity for me to work closely with lots of creative people.
