Tom van Steensel

Graduate Student

I was born and raised in a small town near the Belgian border were I also attended highschool. After several failed courses, I eventually graduated from ROC Tilburg early 2007 with a degree in Marketing and Communication. During that time I did a sales internship at Theaters Tilburg and a communication internship at The Dutch Bed & Breakfast Foundation.

After working for six months I decided to sign up for Business Communications at the University of Applied Sciences Utrecht. The study was advertised as a cross between journalism (one of my failed courses) and communication (which I already had a degree in), so it seemed like a perfect fit. During the third year I did my internship at Sanoma Uitgevers, writing articles about games and movies and afterwards I stayed on as a freelance writer.

I am currently working as a graduate student on a Cell Cahier for the project History Of The Future. Doing research, writing articles, and (in a later stage) visiting locations and interviewing experts. The project is about researching the simularities between visions in the science fiction-genre and our modern day technologies, with (in my case) the focus on media and advertising.

I am not a science fiction-expert by any means, although I do own lots of sci-fi movies based on the written work by Philip K. Dick on dvd and bluray, so for me it’s really interesting project that provides lots of food for thought.
