Wouter Groot

Researcher

After being raised in the Dutch ‘bollenstreek’ (bulbsregion) I moved to the big city of Amsterdam. There I started my Master Media and Culture at the University of Amsterdam. During this inspiring period I combined studying with traveling through the Americas and South East Asia and working for the Amsterdam local television station AT5 as a reporter. It gave me the opportunity to meet some interesting people and enjoy the world in a different way. My personal interests for media, culture and history culminated in my Master thesis on the subject of patriotic and propaganda films in Dutch cinemas during the First World War (1914-1918). The Dutch situation was unique because of its strategic geographical position and its political neutrality. This thesis resulted in a couple of publications in historical journals on the subject of neutrality and propaganda during WW1.

After my graduation I started working as a television producer for one of Europe’s biggest creative television companies. Here I gained tons of practical experience in the creative production process and, above all, had a great time. My next step was to combine this practical experience with my theoretical knowledge for use in the cultural, creative en governmental field, and I chose to work for the Dutch consultancy BMC. I’m specializing in the field of digitization, cultural heritage, organizational advise and governmental and institutional policy making. For the Crossmedialab I’m currently part of the team of Museumkompas. A great project from a professional and personal point of view.

Besides all this I still enjoy to travel, going to the movies and driving my motorbike.
